A care home that feels like a home — because that's how we designed it.

Friendly Care grew from architectural roots: our founder Michael Goss left his practice to design, build and operate care homes himself. Twenty‑five years on, we run six individually designed homes across the Midlands — converted pubs, listed Victorian houses, rural Shropshire grounds — each one shaped to the building it lives in.

Architect-designed

Each home is a sympathetic conversion — never an estate-built unit. From a 1900s listed property to a Birmingham public house, we work with the building, not against it.

Our philosophy

Hotel-like comfort, with the dignity of independence.

We are a family-run business who have been involved in the Care industry for over 25 years and running care homes for 20 years. In our care homes we aim to provide a hotel-like service with a caring, homely and comfortable ambiance. Residents are encouraged to maintain their independence within a supervised environment whilst respecting their privacy and dignity.

Six homes

Each home has its own character — because each building did.

Some of our homes are heritage conversions; some are modern extensions of older properties; one is a former public house on the edge of green-belt land. They share a standard of care; the buildings are allowed to differ.

What we offer

Five kinds of care, one standard of warmth.

Not every home offers every service — nursing, in particular, is concentrated at Princess Lodge and Wood Green where the clinical infrastructure lives. Talk to us about which home suits the person you're placing.

Nursing Care

24-hour qualified nursing for residents whose needs go beyond residential care — chronic conditions, post-surgical recovery, or end-of-life support — delivered with the same homely register the rest of our homes are known for.

Available across all six homes

Residential Care

Long-term residence with personalised care plans, en-suite rooms, home-cooked meals and a programme of daily life and activities. We back independence first; help arrives quietly when it's wanted.

Available across all six homes

Respite Care

Short stays from a few nights to several weeks — for recovery after a hospital stay, to give a family carer a break, or simply to try a home before committing. We keep the same standard of care for a one-week guest as a long-term resident.

Specialist provision in every home

Dementia Care

Calm, predictable environments designed around the way people with dementia actually live: clear sightlines, sensory rooms (at The Friendly Inn), enclosed gardens, staff trained to recognise individual histories, not just symptoms.

Selected homes

Day Care

Daytime company, a hot meal, structured activities, and a chance for family carers to take a few hours back. Day-care guests join in the rhythm of the home for the day, then go home at the end of it.

The founder's story

An architect's leap of faith — and a closed-down pub that became our first home.

Friendly Care grew from its architectural roots as Director Michael Goss took a calculated leap of faith and determination from designing care homes to building and operating them. This key element in our formation has continued and developed over the years to provide interesting and individually designed care homes that integrate modern facilities within a homely atmosphere. Our first care home was The Friendly Inn in Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham — a closed-down public house that was subsequently burnt down. Following a careful and sympathetic conversion the former pub was given a new lease of life and has provided a vital community service for over 25 years. Aptly taking our name from that of the original pub, Friendly Care was formed. The expansion of Friendly Care then began with the addition of Michael's sons to form the family business that operates today. Our aim ever since has been to put our residents at the heart of everything we do — to provide our services within a safe and homely environment similar to that of a caring relative or friend.
